3,400 years ago God told Moses that in the future God would send another leader who would be like Moses. God also told Moses that this leader would speak to the people all that God commanded him. Also for those who would refuse to hear what God speaks through this leader, God would require their life. Deuteronomy 18:18-19.
But God was not speaking about the physical death we all experience at the end of our lives. God was speaking about the second death in the eternal Lake of Fire. As the Bible tells us –
The sea gave up the dead who were in it. Death and Hades gave up the dead who were in them. They were judged, each one according to his works. 14 Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the Lake of Fire. 15 If anyone was not found written in the Book of Life, he was cast into the Lake of Fire. Revelation 20:13-15.
Some 1,400 years following God’s prophecy to Moses, the prophecy was fulfilled in the birth of Jesus Christ. Then when Jesus began his ministry, the Bible tells us.
Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the Good News of God’s Kingdom, 15 and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and God’s Kingdom is at hand! Repent, and believe in the Good News.” Mark 1:14-15.
The word Gospel means good news. The word Repent means to acknowledge your sins against God, to be genuinely sorrowful and to have a deep desire to change your life and live according to the teachings and commandments of God.
Jesus was calling everyone to repent, for the Bible tells us –
All have sinned against God and fall short of the glory of God. Romans 3:23
What sins had they committed? Well, they had all broken one or more of the Ten Commandments of God, and they had all broken the greatest commandment of God, which is that we are to love the Lord our God with all our heart, mind, soul and strength.
The penalty for breaking the commandments of God is death, the second death in the Lake of Fire.
But the good news (the Gospel) that Jesus proclaimed to the people was one of repentance and forgiveness. That the time of God had come, the kingdom of God had come, and for those who would repent and be obedient to God, then God would forgive their sins and they would receive the gift of God of eternal life in heaven. This is why the Bible tells us –
For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son Jesus Christ, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish in the second death, but have eternal life. John 3:16.
God reveals his own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.Romans 5:8
The Bible tells us this offer of forgiveness for the repentance of sins was not just for those people Jesus spoke to 2,000 years ago. It is for us today, for we have all broken the commandments of God. some of us have made jokes about God and Jesus Christ, and some of us have used the name of God or Jesus Christ as a swear word.
Yet the Bible tells us that Jesus's death on the cross was no accident, it was for a sacrifice. The second death in that Lake of Fire as punishment for our sins against God, Jesus Christ has taken our place. God has accepted Jesus's death on the cross as payment for your sins, so that you may be forgiven and receive eternal life in heaven.
In most religions, people make their sacrifices to their gods in the hope their sacrifice is pleasing to their gods. But in the Christian religion, God has provided the sacrifice of His Son Jesus Christ in the hope the sacrifice of God will be pleasing to us!
