Christian Meditation and Listening to God.
Traditional Christian Meditation is a spiritual practice that fosters a deeper connection with God and cultivates inner peace. Rooted in biblical teachings and enriched by centuries of Christian tradition, this form of meditation invites believers to reflect on Scripture, pray, and commune with the Holy Spirit. This book explores the history, techniques, and spiritual benefits of Christian meditation, providing practical guidance for integrating this discipline into daily life.
Christian meditation is a contemplative practice focused on God’s presence and His Word. Unlike other forms of meditation that may aim for detachment or self-awareness, Christian meditation emphasises intimacy with God and alignment with His will.
Psalm 1:2: “But whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law, day and night.”
Joshua 1:8: “Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night.”
The Key Principles are –
Centre your thoughts on God’s attributes, actions, and promises.
Let the Word of God (from the Holy Bible) be the foundation of your meditation.
Approach meditation as a form of prayer, seeking a Holy Communion with God.
How to Meditate on Scriptures from The Holy Bible
Select a passage of Scripture and read it slowly.
Reflect on the passage, focusing on words or phrases that resonate with you.
Respond to God in prayer, sharing your thoughts and feelings.
Rest in God’s presence, allowing His truth to settle in your heart.
Christian meditation is a transformative practice that deepens faith and nurtures the soul. By embracing this discipline, believers can experience God’s presence in profound ways, finding peace, purpose, and spiritual renewal. Let this journey of meditation draw you closer to the heart of God.
Christian author David Ramanauskas in his book – Evidence for God, writes about another form of Christian Meditation which is a gateway to receiving the Gifts of the Holy Spirit.
1 Corinthians 12:7-10 describes the gifts.
7 Now to each one the manifestation of the Holy Spirit is given for the common good. 8 To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, 10 to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. 1 Corinthians 12:7-10.
The kind of Christian mediation David describes in his book as Listening to God.
Some forms of meditation require you to empty your mind and keep it empty for as long as you can.
Christian meditation based upon the Holy Bible requires you to read and hold those scriptures in your mind.
But what David discovered after many years in the ministry is that if you want to hear from God. then you need to shut up and listen!
You begin by sitting comfortably, eyes closed, and then say a very short prayer inviting God to speak to you, in any way God may choose to speak to you.
Then relax, keep still and quiet. If distracting thoughts come into your mind, don’t get annoyed just accept them as distracting thoughts and clear your mind.
Your aim is to keep your mind clear for God.
Imagine that inside your brain you have a large flat-screen TV!
Then imagine you stitch the TV on, but all you see is a blank screen.
Now you wait for God to put something on that screen. It might be a single word or a sentence. It might be a scripture, a hymn/song psalm or prayer. It could be a picture or something like watching a few seconds of a film.
That art is learning to discern what is from God, what is from your own mind or the desires of your heart, or from what might be from the enemy (Satan).
Then, finish with a short prayer, thanking God for spending time with you and helping you learn to hear from God.
Our aim is to be able to hear from God when we want and need to hear from God. but also to be able to hear from God whenever God speaks to us for ourselves and for others.
Through the Christian Meditation of Listening to God, we discover God can speak to us (audibly), through our dreams or visions, through His angels or other Christians, or other objects.
Let me give you an example of Listening to God. I was in a church one evening and before the start of the service I asked God to give me a message for someone. I looked around the church at the congregation, and noticed a friend whose mother was close to the end of her life.
I felt sure my friend could do with a word of encouragement and comfort from God. so I closed my eyes and asked God to give me something that would comfort my friend.
Immediately God gave me a picture of a small brown dog. The picture didn’t mean anything to me, and I was a bit disappointed that God hadn’t given me something to comfort my friend.
At 4am God woke me up and reminded me about the small brown dog. God had given me that picture in a direct request from me for my friend. And God had expected me to share the picture with my friend, but I didn’t because I didn’t think the picture was of any value.
At 7am I emailed my friend telling him I wanted God to give me a message from God that would comfort him. But all God gave me was a picture of a small brown dog.
The following Sunday in church he told me that the day after giving him that picture of the small brown dog. He picked up his sister to visit their mum in hospital. His sister told him that she had been shopping for something for their mum, something that would comfort her. She opened her bag, and there was a small brown (stuffed toy) dog!
When my friend to his sister about my message from God, they were both amazed, delighted and comforted. And their mum was comforted by having the small brown dog at her bedside.
In my book – Evidence for God I have shared in detail how to Listen to God and given many examples of God speaking to me directly, through His angels, or my dreams, visions, other Christians, and the scriptures.
I have also described how God led me into the healing ministry (eventually healing me of Pancreatic Cancer without surgery or any medical treatment).
Also speaking in tongues, prophecy and word of knowledge. Those gifts of the Spirit that God gave to His church 2,000 years ago are still available to Christians today.
