Evidence Jesus Christ is God
When I was an atheist and didn’t believe in God, I thought that Jesus Christ was a real person, but just a man who went about healing people and performing miracles like changing water into wine.
But when I became a Christian and then began to study the evidence for God, I came to realise the truth that Jesus Christ was and is God.
God has revealed Himself to the world as God the Father, God the Son Jesus Christ, and God the Holy Spirit. This is known as the Trinity of God, which means there is only one God, but the one and same God within the three distinct persons of Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
Every year in the Christian Calendar we celebrate ‘Trinity Sunday’ and in churches around the world, the priest or minister will deliver a sermon on the Trinity of God (as I have done in the past). I am sure that everyone of us will feel our explanation falls short of explaining something so supernatural and way beyond our understanding.
However, thank God for Jesus Christ, because through Jesus God has revealed His nature, His character, His personality and His love for you and me.
Now, some people say that in the Bible Jesus Christ never claimed to be God, but that is not true.
In AD 325 Christian bishops from around the world gathered together to formulate a statement of faith that everyone could agree on. That statement of faith was known as the Nicene Creed, and was based upon the scriptures of both the Jews (the Old Testament) and of the Christians (New Testament) with together formed the Christian Holy Bible. It was also based upon the evidence of the prophecies of god and the evidence of personal experience of the miracles, power and presence of God in the lives of the Christians.
Here is the Nicene Creed.
The Nicene Creed
We believe in one God,
the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made,
of one being with the Father.
Through him all things were made.
For us men and for our salvation
he came down from heaven;
by the power of the Holy Spirit
he became incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and was made man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures;
he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son.
With the Father and the Son he is worshipped and glorified.
He has spoken through the Prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen.
In the Gospel of John from the New Testament of the Bible, I would like to share with you three passages of scripture that demonstrate Jesus Christ’s claim to equality with God.
The first scripture reveals that Jesus Christ was with God in the creation of the world and humankind.
In the beginning was Jesus Christ, and Jesus Christ was with God, and the Jesus Christ was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through Jesus. Without Jesus, nothing was made that has been made. 4 In Jesus was life, and the life was the light of men.
10 Jesus Christ was in the world, and the world was made through him, and the world didn’t recognize him. 11 Jesus Christ came to his own, and those who were his own didn’t receive him. 12 But as many as received and believed in Jesus Christ, to them he gave the right to become God’s children, to those who believe in his name Jesus Christ: 13 who were born not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. John 1:1-4, 10-13
The second scripture tells us that some of the Jews wanted to kill Jesus because Jesus claimed equality with God.
For this cause the Jews persecuted Jesus, and sought to kill him, because he did these things on the Sabbath. 17 But Jesus answered them, “My Father is still working, so I am working, too.” 18 For this cause therefore the Jews sought all the more to kill him, because he not only broke the Sabbath, but also called God his own Father, making himself equal with God. John 5:16-18
Again, some of the Jews wanted to stone Jesus to death, because Jesus claimed equality with God. When Jesus said the words “I and the Father are one,” to the Jews it was just the same to them as Jesus saying I am God.
Jesus said “I and the Father are one.” 31 Therefore the Jews took up stones again to stone him. 32 Jesus answered them, “I have shown you many good works from my Father. For which of those works do you stone me?”
33 The Jews answered him, “We don’t stone you for a good work, but for blasphemy: because you, being a man, make yourself God.” John 10:30-33
At the end of Jesus ministry He was on the way to Jerusalem where he knew the Jews would crucify Him. He prepared and comforted His disciples by saying -
“Don’t let your heart be troubled. Believe in God. Believe also in me. 2 In my Father’s house are many homes. If it weren’t so, I would have told you. I am going to prepare a place for you. 3 If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and will receive you to myself; that where I am, you may be there also. 4 You know where I go, and you know the way.”
5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going. How can we know the way?”
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to God My Father, except through me. John 14:1-6
Again, Jesus Christ claimed equality with God by claiming God was His Father, and that no one has access to god the Father except through Jesus Christ.
Then Philip asks Jesus to show God the Father to them, and Jesus again claims equality with God by Saying
-
7 If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on, you know him, and have seen him.”
8 Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us.”
9 Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you such a long time, and do you not know me, Philip? He who has seen me has seen the Father. How do you say, ‘Show us the Father?’ 10 Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? The words that I tell you, I speak not from myself; but the Father who lives in me does his works. 11 Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me; or else believe me for the very works’ sake. John 14:7-11.
May I suggest you read my book – Evidence for God: Prophecies, Miracles and the Power of God. You will discover the evidence for God, the evidence that the history of humankind has been unfolding according to the predetermined plan and purpose of God, and also the evidence that Jesus Christ is God, and that God loves and cares about you.
As the scriptures reveal –
For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son Jesus Christ, that whoever believes and trusts in Him shall not perish in the second death, but have everlasting life in heaven. John 3:16.
