Spiritual Warfare as a Soldier of Christ

When I first became a Christian I didn’t give much thought to angels demons or Satan. I used to think that if I didn’t bother Satan, then Satan wouldn’t bother me! Well, I soon discovered while I was insignificant to Satan, it wasn’t long before I discovered the reality of spiritual warfare. However, it was many years before as part of the healing ministry we began casting out demons.

As Christians, we are called to be both servants and soldiers of Jesus Christ, and Paul writing to the Ephesians tells us how we are to prepare for spiritual warfare.

10 Finally, build up your strength in union with the Lord and by means of his mighty power. 11 Put on all the armour that God gives you, so that you will be able to stand up against the Devil's evil tricks. 12 For we are not fighting against human beings but against the wicked spiritual forces in the heavenly world, the rulers, authorities, and cosmic powers of this dark age. 13 So put on God's armour now! Then when the evil day comes, you will be able to resist the enemy's attacks; and after fighting to the end, you will still hold your ground.

14 So stand ready, with truth as a belt tight around your waist, with righteousness as your breastplate, 15 and as your shoes the readiness to announce the Good News of peace. 16 At all times carry faith as a shield; for with it you will be able to put out all the burning arrows shot by the Evil One. 17 And accept salvation as a helmet, and the word of God as the sword which the Spirit gives you. 18 Do all this in prayer, asking for God's help. Pray on every occasion, as the Spirit leads. For this reason keep alert and never give up; pray always for all God's people. Ephesians 6:10-18

Of course, to be a soldier of Jesus Christ you need to know about the evidence for God and the Gospel of Christ and be in a relationship with Christ – to be in a Holy communion and a Holy Communication with God through Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit of God. In 1972 when I joined the Royal Navy along with a class of thirty other civilians. They gave us our uniforms to wear and we looked like sailors in the Royal Navy, but it took a couple of years of training before we were actually of any use in time of warfare!

This is what Jesus said about the different kinds of people who hear the Gospel (the good news) of Jesus Christ.

3 He spoke to them many things in parables, saying, “Behold, a farmer went out to sow. 4 As he sowed, some seeds fell by the roadside, and the birds came and devoured them. 5 Others fell on rocky ground, where they didn’t have much soil, and immediately they sprang up, because they had no depth of earth. 6 When the sun had risen, they were scorched. Because they had no root, they withered away. 7 Others fell among thorns. The thorns grew up and choked them. 8 Others fell on good soil and yielded fruit: some one hundred times as much, some sixty, and some thirty. 9 He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”

18 “Hear, then, the parable of the farmer. 19 When anyone hears the word of the Kingdom and doesn’t understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away that which has been sown in his heart. This is what was sown by the roadside. 20 What was sown on the rocky places, this is he who hears the word and immediately with joy receives it; 21 yet he has no root in himself, but endures for a while. When oppression or persecution arises because of the word, immediately he stumbles. 22 What was sown among the thorns, this is he who hears the word, but the cares of this age and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and he becomes unfruitful. 23 What was sown on the good ground, this is he who hears the word and understands it, who most certainly bears fruit and produces, some one hundred times as much, some sixty, and some thirty.” Matthew 13:3-9, 18-23.

As Christians, we receive the gift of eternal life through Jesus Christ, but some through their own foolishness or spiritual attack by the enemy, make them throw the gift of God away as though it was worthless!
